We hired this company to clean up our beds, refresh mulch, and clean up the driveway leaves. Although we live on a large lot, the focus of the work was a much smaller area. At their request, they came out beforehand to evaluate the job. I requested a quote at that time. Initially, it was about $700+materials, with some commentary about challenges with labor and how that shaped his estimate. He also told me he's already out money because Thumbtack charges him when we do instant book, regardless of whether we move forward. Ultimately, we landed on ~$500+materials. They arrived more or less on time with the owner and 2 other guys. After some discussion about who was providing bags to bag things up, they got going. I worked from home that day and was texted to come out multiple times to look at things, but frankly there was really nothing to discuss. This was disruptive. What I did do during these trips out was take that time to remind the owner of areas that were in the job scope and point out where quality control was lacking. They got too little mulch and had to go back for more, which was raised to me as one more issue/reason why this job was hard. Where there was rock work (which they knew in advance and I offered to have them come spray it first), he told me at the end of the day that it would require hand pulling and they didn't have the time. We had already agreed this was in scope. They also broke a sizable branch on our young Mountain Laurel tree, which is a setback. Frankly, I didn't have the interest in haggling it out with him about the work, so I just wanted to move on. In the end, they did the basics in most areas, and then really mailed it in elsewhere. See pics for basic things that should have been addressed. FWIW, My husband and I are familiar with what it takes to maintain this ourselves and it's really not that hard. Especially with 3 guys. I will not hire them again.
