Transforming a Yard: From Eyesore to Oasis
Transforming a Yard: From Eyesore to Oasis
At Exotic Landscape, we take pride in turning neglected outdoor spaces into stunning retreats. Recently, we had the pleasure of working with a homeowner in Burlingame, CA, who reached out to us to revitalize both their front and backyard. Thomas C. and his wife were eager to transform their previously sparse and uninviting yard into a beautiful oasis where they could relax and entertain.
Before: The Challenge
When we first visited Thomas’s property, we noticed several challenges that needed to be addressed:
- Ugly Stumps and Bushes: The presence of three tree stumps and a dense row of overgrown bushes made the yard feel cramped and unwelcoming.
- Inefficient Sprinkler System: The existing sprinkler setup was outdated, leading to inefficient watering that caused frustration for the homeowners.
- Drab Landscaping: The concrete pathway detracted from the potential charm of the outdoor space and didn’t mesh well with the overall vision Thomas had for his home.
Thomas and his wife wanted a design that not only enhanced the aesthetic appeal of their property but also fit within their budget. They reached out to us for our expertise in landscaping solutions and we were excited to get started!
The Transformation Process
Our dedicated team collaborated closely with Thomas and his wife to create a tailored landscaping plan that suited their vision and requirements. Here's an overview of what we accomplished during this transformative project:
1. Debris Removal: We began by removing the three unsightly tree stumps and the massive row of bushes, clearing the way for a fresh start.
2. Sprinkler System Installation: A new sprinkler system was installed, including updated plumbing, valves, and a controller. This upgrade ensured efficient watering tailored to the needs of their new landscaping.
3. Sod Installation: We laid down lush, vibrant sod, instantly transforming the landscape from barren to lush.
4. French Drains: To address any water drainage issues, we installed French drains in the backyard, directing excess water away and maintaining a dry, enjoyable space.
5. Hardscape Upgrade: We removed the concrete pathway and replaced it with beautiful paver stones, enhancing the walkability and aesthetic appeal of the surroundings.
6. Decomposed Granite: Finally, we applied decomposed granite to specific areas, providing a clean and natural look that complemented the new design.
After: The Results
The transformation was nothing short of incredible. Thomas and his wife now enjoy a stunning outdoor space that reflects their personal style and meets their functional needs. As Thomas shared about his experience:
> “Cody did an amazing job at my house. Previously my front and backyard was an eyesore. Now I'm able to enjoy it. He worked with me and my wife for a design that fit our needs and budget. He even let me pay in installment plans which was awesome. Even after a year of getting this finished, I sent Cody a text letting him know something was up with my sprinklers and he came the following day to address the issue.”
Thanks to our team’s dedication and expertise, Thomas now has a vibrant and inviting yard to enjoy. It’s amazing to see how a thoughtful design and quality workmanship can revitalize a space and positively impact a homeowner’s lifestyle.

This article explores the transformation process and highlights the outstanding results we achieved together.
Understanding the Client's Vision
When Derek first reached out to us, he expressed his desire for a comprehensive makeover of his backyard. Prior to our involvement, the space was rather uninviting, characterized by bare patches and limited landscaping features. Derek was looking for a layout that not only enhanced the aesthetic appeal but also suited his lifestyle and preferences.

Overcoming Challenges
The project presented its challenges, particularly due to the intense heat and smoke during the working weeks. However, our skilled crew remained dedicated, arriving on time each day and working diligently. We focused on creating a sturdy foundation and incorporated features like beautiful stone pathways and vibrant plantings to enhance the overall ambiance of the yard.
Cultivating the Final Look
As we neared the end of the project, we paid meticulous attention to the details, ensuring a polished finish was achieved. While there were a few areas where minor adjustments were necessary, the overall outcome was overwhelmingly positive. We left Derek with a stunning landscape that he could enjoy for years to come.
The Result
Derek's backyard transformation was nothing short of remarkable. Once a mundane space, it has now become an inviting haven that showcases lush greenery and beautiful hardscaping features.
