SHODDY CRAFTSMANSHIP. DID NOT HONOR WARRANTY. TOTAL CHAOS. COMPLETE HACKS. 0 out of 10, would not recommend. Gustavo got paid and disappeared before the job was done. He cut every corner possible.
The shower floor is completely flat and does not drain. The hardwood floors are buckling. The hood install is a mess. The rest of the kitchen is not much better. None of the plumbing is to code. He tried to charge us twice for electrical. Nothing was done right.
Integrity and character are the most important traits to look for when hiring a contractor to work on your home, likely your most valuable asset. During our project Gustavo showed over and over that he canโt be trusted. Now I have to pay the huge price (to another contractor) for making the mistake of hiring Gustavo.
Notice he is not a member of the Better Business Bureau..you have absolutely no recourse when he screws you over.
Not only is the work sloppy and needs to be redone but Gustavo is either extremely dishonest, incompetent, or more likely, both.
For anyone still thinking about working with Gustavo:
1. Get a detailed plan. In our experience Gustavo doesnโt seem to plan anything more than 24 hours in advance and stays in a reactive firefighting mode in trying to either talk his way around mistakes or patch over sloppy work.
2. Read the manufacturers instructions carefully. Donโt count on Gustavo or his crew to read any instructions so it will be up to you to make sure appliances/fixtures are installed properly.
3. Find your own plumber and electrician. These are the most critical aspects of any job and better not to trust someone who isnโt accountable directly to you. Gustavo tried to save himself money by having his crew, rather than a plumber install items such as the toilet or shower fixtures resulting in the toilet leaking on our downstairs neighbors and a shower with a number of screws missing and other lazy mistakes such as not using plumbers tape.
4.Be ready to spend a lot of time and energy managing a very untrustworthy manager.
Other issues include:
-A shower floor that is completely flat and does not drain. Again, nobody is doing quality control and this issue is going to cost us at least $15,000 to correct.
After informing Gustavo about the issue (because he never checked his subcontractorโs work) he proposed a cosmetic retiling that would be cheap and easy for him and would do nothing to fix the underlying issue. I chased him around for three months before it became clear that he had no intention of honoring his warranty. He didnโt seem to have knowledge of the
plumbing codes on shower floor slope or understand the fundamentals of shower construction. I wish I could say he left me high and dry, but, the water pools up on the shower floor and will eventually lead to a moldy, funky bathroom.
-Poor range hood installation. I asked him not to rush on installing the hood because it was critical to our backsplash install and needed to be done correctly. I later found out the put some janky screws in the side to rather than securing it properly according to the mfgrs instructions.
-Crew peeing in the shower. Despite our efforts to get Gustavo to prioritize installing the toilet he delayed resulting in his crew leaving a smelly mess in our shower that we had to clean in the evenings.
-Sloppy use of silicone. Iโm not sure who taught him this but Gustavo insisted to me that the proper way to install silicone is to
glop it on, let it dry and clean it up with a blade later..oh ok.
-Electrical switches/outlets that donโt work. Despite a hefty electrical change order bill nobody did any quality control on the work.
Itโs worth noting that Gustavo does not seem to possess any knowledge of craftsmanship or skills himself. He contracts out the work to subs and has no idea how to manage them. They quickly realize they can walk all over him, get paid and get out the door.
He says his name is Gustavo but after seeing the quality of work weโve been calling him Sloppy Joe.
