I had the opportunity to hire JL Tree Service Inc to perform some 'deadwooding' on a cherry tree that was making both myself and my neighbor a bit nervous. We hired JL based on their estimate.

After the work was performed, I was disappointed to see that all of the wood, of which I estimate was about a cord and a half, was left piled against my neighbors home. My neighbor and I each have about .5 acres of land and the tree was located right on the border. At the time of the hire, I requested to the scheduler that all of the viable wood should be placed on my property (she noted it and said she would pass on the instructions).

I placed a call the following morning and sent an email asking for the error to be remedied, as I asked for the wood and it was an eyesore on my neighbors property - a simple request.

Despite making follow-up emails and calls, seven days later, I received a call from John S. with JL. He informed me that he was looking to get a crew over to move the wood. I informed him that after seven days of waiting for any form of communication, I moved the wood myself (with the help of my neighbor).

John spoke to me with a cavalier tone. He informed me that he stopped by four days after the work, but forgot to call me, leave a note or send out a crew (on account of needing to perform estimates at other properties). He finally remembered to at least contact me after seven days.

I now know that once the check I rendered was deposited the day after the work, JL Tree Service had no concern for my request. This was only reinforced when John said he forgot to call or send out a crew (on account of needing to perform estimates at other properties).

JL Tree Service had me as a customer, one who was ready to rehire them for extensive tree removal in Spring 2016, however, they made it clear that once they have your money, they are no longer concerned with customer service or satisfaction. Their priority is not on keeping their customers, rather it is on finding new ones.

We were very satisfied with JL Tree Service. When I first called to schedule an arborist to look at some of our trees, the receptionist said I would receive a call back within 4-5 days. After two weeks, I called back. The arborist Jose A called me back the next day to schedule an appointment. Other than this delay, we were very satisfied with JL Tree Service. Jose gave us as much time as we needed to discuss our concerns. He took his time evaluating our problematic trees and provided us with reasonable, appropriate and honest recommendations. Our two Bradford pear trees did indeed need serious pruning and trimming for their continued health and longevity. We discussed our concern of the rampant and inappropriate scalping of neighborhood trees by other "contractors" and our expectations for the work on our trees. Jose assured us that his crew could satisfy our concerns while appropriately taking care of the trees. Jose recommended that the other trees' issues were not as critical and were not necessary to address at this time. And his charge for the work was reasonable and inline with our expectations and competitor research. Once we returned the signed proposal, work was schedule within the week which was reasonable. The crew arrived promptly and took the time to assess the site before beginning their work. They had already been apprised of our concerns but we re-discussed with them anyway- to be sure. They did a great job of pruning and trimming, often checking with us for our approval/satisfaction. They made sure that discarded limbs did not damage existing plantings and appropriately disposed of them all. They raked and blew debris clear of our property. The crew did a good job, was very competent and nice, respectful of our property and cognizant of our expectations. We would highly recommend JL Tree Service and would use them again.

Today was the second time in two months that we have used JL's tree service. Because their first job can in so reasonably, we were able to budget for them to come a second time and finish all of the tree work we had on our wish list. The crew did a fantastic job of yard clean up before leaving. I highly recommend this company!

Update -- 3.5 to 4 stars. With the circumstances and objects in their way, the crew did a meticulous job. Yes, I was wowed. Regarding the problems -- the walnut dust / juglone issue I mentioned was something I should have anticipated and had the crew not blow it. Second, imo the invoice issue was unusual in our case, but perhaps internal communication still needs attention to prevent repeats. Finally, with the oil leak issue, I spread kitty litter and that worked well, and they're sending out a crew to powerwash. So hopefully that will be satisfactory. If not, we'll have to talk about resealing. So the company needs to eagle-eye equipment maintenance and vehicle leaks bc nothing good can result otherwise.

Overall, however, I will recommend them to neighbors.

I've used JL Tree Service in the past and have generally been very pleased with their services. However, last week I had them do some tree work at my house and the scheduling was handled in a completely abysmal manner. They were supposed to start my tree work in the early afternoon and never showed up until 4:30 and that was only after I called the estimator to complain. The guys there to do the work then proceeded to tell me they would just do it tomorrow. When I told them this was unacceptable because I would be out of town, they started my work at almost 5 pm. They proceeded to completely trash my pool so that I was required to spend an hour in the dark fishing debris out of it. (i was leaving to go out of town in the morning).I had the impression that they just wanted to squeeze my job in and get paid and showed little interest in customer service. I'm not sure if i'll use them again.
