After years of reading about the virtues of heat pumps and heat pump water heaters, I could never get past the thought that I’d be trading an enormous gas bill for an equally ginormous electric bill, on top of the cost of installing the new $y$tem. Then I read an article about a Bay Area company called Harvest, which had figured out ingenious ways to program its bespoke computers to run all that equipment with such high efficiency that it would pay for itself in just a few years. They also gave me an itemized list of state, local and federal rebates and tax breaks that reduced my out-of-pocket cost to less than it would have paid to replace my 13-year-old gas furnace and water heater.

Best of all, they connected me with a local installer—Ozone Service of San Jose—that would do the job of removing the old, air polluting equipment and replacing it with an all-electric, computerized and (dare I say?) AI-driven system that knows when drawing power from the grid is cheapest.
