I had a very frustrating experience with United Appliance & HVAC Repair due to the lack of communication between their dispatch and technician. The technician refused to enter the property because they claimed they couldnāt go in without someone present, even though I explained that tenants were on-site. Despite me granting remote access, the technician still refused to enter the house. I told dispatch I would be there in 20 minutes and she informed me that the technician would wait for me. However, shortly after, I received a call saying the technician couldnāt wait and had left. This was in direct contradiction to what I had been told earlier. This complete lack of communication and coordination between dispatch and the technician made the whole situation incredibly frustrating. I wonāt be using their services again and would advise others to look elsewhere if you value reliable communication and professionalism. Very disappointing overall.

When I found that my fridge had lost its cool, my top priority was to get it fixed ASAP, so I looked on Yelp for somebody as close as possible, and found United listed as being in the Excelsior, just down the hill. (I was trying to remember who it was that fixed my oven fifteen years ago; they were super fast, and right in that area, maybe this is them, I thought.) Perfect! I called them in the morning as soon as they opened, and they said they'd send someone out in the afternoon, giving us a two hour window at the end of the day. My wife and I rearrange our work and daycare pickup plans to make sure we'll be there, because we really want this fridge fixed by dinner time if possible. The appointment window came and went. I gave them a call, they said they'd call the tech and get back to me. Another hour, I'd heard nothing, I called back. This time I got confirmation. He was still coming, but it'd be another couple of hours. He finally shows up right about the time we're trying to put the baby to bed. He takes a quick look and says that it looks like it's just some ice in the fan, he'll have to come back another day to fix it, because it needs to be emptied out and the freezer needs to be defrosted. (I could have been doing that during the three hours I was waiting around! Aaargh!) And no appointments available for tomorrow, so he'll come back in two days, in the middle of the work day. (We once again rearrange things to make sure that one of us will be there to meet him.) So, two days later, he comes and cleans the fan, and the price is reasonable, and the fridge works, all's well that ends well. It took a lot more hassle than I'd hoped for from a small local repair shop, but at least I have a working fridge. Right? About a week and a half later, after we've rebought all our perishables, same problem recurs. We call them back. It'll be two days before someone can come out and take a look. It is at this point, as I'm re-looking up their phone number, that I see a business address in Concord, and a map of their service area that shows that I'm on the very edge of it. The delays are starting to make more sense! While we're freaking out at the prospect of another week with no refrigeration and a looming heat wave, I find a different place in the Richmond (not quite just down the street, but I double-check that they are definitely in the city) that has good reviews for quick response times. They come out the same day, in a one hour appointment window that they hit dead center, they quickly diagnose the underlying problem (busted thermostat!) and they have the replacement part handy so they fix it on the spot. Exactly the experience I was hoping for the first time around! That was two days ago, and knock-on-wood, the fridge is still working. We of course cancelled our appointment with United; if we'd kept it, we'd probably be on our fiftieth pound of bagged ice trying to keep the milk from going bad and looking at tomorrow to get an actual fix. Anyway, I don't blame the guys at United for being stretched thin -- seems like they might be victims of their own success! But if you're in SF with a time-sensitive job, I might suggest looking for a repair shop that's closer to home.
