Transforming a 1970s Home
Transforming a 1970s Home
At Veteran Built Homes, we pride ourselves on delivering top-tier renovation services that turn outdated homes into beautiful masterpieces. Recently, we had the pleasure of working with a wonderful client, Carl Brewer, who wanted to breathe new life into his mid-1970s contemporary home. The project was extensive but incredibly rewarding, and we are thrilled to share the transformation journey.
The Challenge: Outdated & In Need of Transformation
When Carl initially reached out to our team, his home felt stuck in the past. The outdated design elements and insufficient functional spaces were a significant concern. Our mission was to transform the space into a modern, functional, and aesthetically pleasing environment. The project scope included:
- Removal of structural walls
- Framing for a custom loft build-out
- Complete renovation of three full bathrooms
- Overhaul of the kitchen
- Addition of a stunning primary suite bathroom and walk-in closet
- Installation of new windows, doors, flooring, lighting, painting, and finishes throughout
Given the comprehensive nature of this project, we understood the necessity for meticulous planning and professional execution to achieve the desired outcome.
Our Transformation Process
With the expertise of our seasoned team, including our experienced Navy Seabee veterans Joe and Mark, we got to work. Our approach was methodical and detail-oriented, reflecting the military precision that is a hallmark of our service.
- Design Phase: We began with in-house design consultations that eliminated the common stress associated with coordinating multiple contractors. This made for a seamless experience for Carl and his family.
- Demolition and Framing: Our team carefully demolished the walls that needed removal without compromising the integrity of the house. The new loft was framed, setting the stage for an airy and open living environment.
- Renovations: We executed stunning renovations for three bathrooms, ensuring each one reflected a modern style while providing optimal functionality. The kitchen underwent a complete overhaul, transforming it into a chef’s haven equipped with contemporary appliances and smart storage solutions.
- Finishing Touches: Our work included installing new flooring, doors, windows, and tasteful lighting fixtures, perfectly completed with fresh coats of paint. These elements brought a cohesive and stylish look to the home.
Throughout the project, our onsite crew maintained open communication, ensuring that Carl and his wife were informed at every stage. We treated their home with respect, cleaning up daily and addressing any questions promptly.
The Remarkable Results
The final result was nothing short of breathtaking. Carl’s home had been transformed from a dated 1970s layout into a modern masterpiece that captivated both functionality and design. Here’s what he had to say about his experience:
> “Outstanding renovation - true craftsmanship and professionalism... Joe and Mark transformed our house into a true work of art, and we couldn't be happier!”

Transforming Homes with Care
Transforming Homes with Care
At Veteran Built Homes, we are dedicated to improving our clients' living spaces, and this recent project in Woodbridge, VA, perfectly showcases our commitment to quality craftsmanship and attention to detail. Our client, Karen Pao, approached us with a vision to enhance her home, specifically focusing on rebuilding her deck, updating her half bath with new floors and fixtures, and ensuring everything was executed within her budget.
Before: A Home in Need of Care
Initially, Karen's home featured an outdoor deck that had seen better days, along with a half bath that was in need of modern updates. The existing wooden floor in the half bath had damages, and the outdated bathroom fixtures no longer met her standards. It was clear that the space needed a transformation, and that's when she reached out to our team.
> "Veteran Built Homes was recommended to me by an acquaintance who had a lot of work done on an old house." - Karen Pao
Karen was looking for a reliable partner for her project. She appreciated our laid-back approach during the estimation process. We focused on finding solutions that fit her vision without pushing for unnecessary upgrades. We quickly established a formal contract and project management plan, which instilled a level of confidence that she had in us.
The Transformation Process
As we began the process, we uncovered some hidden issues—specifically, rotting wood in the deck. We approached this setback professionally by providing a formal change request to Karen before proceeding, ensuring she was fully informed and in agreement about the necessary adjustments to the project’s scope. To keep the project on track, we adjusted our schedule to start with the inside work first.
Here are the main steps we undertook:
1. Bathroom Overhaul: We replaced the damaged wooden floor with modern tiles, updated the fixtures, and even painted behind the toilet to give the space a fresh look.
2. Expert Plumbing: Our licensed plumber installed new faucets and showerheads, replacing old waterlines to ensure everything was up to code and functioning perfectly.
3. Deck Reconstruction: Once the permits were in order, our team worked diligently to build a new deck, ensuring solid construction that would stand the test of time.
Throughout the process, our project manager went above and beyond—he even took time on a weekend to personally assist with cleanup when a dumpster fell through.
After: A Beautifully Updated Home
The completed half bath was met with rave reviews by Karen, who appreciated the meticulous work:
> "The half bath was finished beautifully. They did not cut corners and worked with my budget and requirement." - Karen Pao
The new deck was another highlight—a strong, well-constructed addition that truly transformed Karen’s outdoor space. Our team made sure to address all minor fixes identified during a quick walk-through, showcasing our commitment to quality and client satisfaction.
Moreover, Karen later utilized our handyman services for additional home repairs. Our handyman arrived on time, conducted thorough diagnostics, and completed the tasks with the same level of quality and attention that she had come to expect from us.
> "The quality of work was superb. He took care of some of my most daunting -- and thus most delayed -- home repairs!" - Karen Pao
Conclusion: Trust in Our Craftsmanship
We are proud of the work we've accomplished at Veteran Built Homes. This project not only transformed Karen's home but also strengthened our relationship with her based on trust and respect. From renovating her deck to creating a modern bath space, our mission remains the same: to deliver exceptional service with integrity.

Stunning Bathroom Transformation
Stunning Bathroom Transformation
At Veteran Built Homes, we understand the significance of a well-designed bathroom in your home. When Susie Schmuckler reached out to us for her bathroom renovation, she had a clear vision but faced some challenges in getting it done. After interviewing three companies, she recognized our commitment to quality and clarity, which led her to choose our team for the project.
The Before: A Bathroom in Need of a Revamp
Susie's bathroom was functional, but it lacked modern aesthetics and practical features. She sought a transformation that not only met her needs but also improved the overall experience of using the space. Susie’s desire for a fresh look, combined with our team's capability, set the stage for an exciting renovation journey.
The Transformation Process
Our project manager, Glen, led the way in orchestrating a team that could visualize and bring Susie's dream bathroom to life. Right from the beginning, we established clear communication about the scope of work and what materials Susie would need to provide. This transparency made it easy for her to order everything without any confusion.
Given a tight schedule, we managed to shift our team around to accommodate Susie's timeline. In just 10 days, we successfully completed the project, exactly as estimated!
Skilled Teamwork
During the renovation, specialized tasks required efficient coordination between our skilled team members. While our tile installer was a subcontractor, the majority of the work was carried out by our dedicated employees, Jeff and Joseph. Their professionalism shined through as they consistently arrived on time, displaying respect for Susie's home and personal space.
> “Our bathroom reno, while a small job, required various specialists to be able to come and go throughout the two-week period. Only the tile installer was a subcontractor, all others were company employees.” – Susie Schmuckler
Every day began with Glen outlining the day's tasks, ensuring that Susie was always in the loop. His attentiveness and commitment to project oversight ensured everything went smoothly.
Going Above and Beyond
During the renovation, a hiccup arose when the tiles procured by Susie turned out to be damaged. Glen took immediate action, returning the broken tiles to Home Depot, verifying the replacements, and even ensuring that the rest of the cracked tiles were returned for a refund. This level of dedication to customer service really stood out.
> “Glen went above and beyond to resolve the issue… We truly appreciated his effort.” – Susie Schmuckler
The After: A Beautifully Transformed Bathroom
The results of the renovation were simply stunning! Susie now has a functional yet elegant space that reflects her vision. From the tiling to the new lighting installed in both the shower and the primary bathroom, every detail was meticulously handled. Susie's proactive approach with Jeff, along with our team's responsiveness to her requests, embodied a collaborative effort that led to great outcomes.
