I delivered a load of plants to this outfit. these come from Woodburn Oregon. where you can find a lot of different kinds. very good quality trees.
let me tell you why the mark up. 3000 miles (4.00 gallon/5 miles to gallon) we use more fuel when cars don't let us over going up mountains, it's called momentum. that's another reason prices are high. be nice to trucks. another reason , one store... not 400 box stores where they can by 50000 plants and get a better deal. do the math people. buy local. local families working hard and one truck driver going 3000 miles in 5 days missing my little boy every minute so there are beautiful trees for u to love or complain about prices. count your blessings we are free.

I understand that a local business like Merrifield Garden Center can't compete with the prices offered by a national chain like Home Depot, but I was shocked at the difference. An 8 inch plastic clay pot & dish cost more than 3x than at Home Depot - $9.50 before tax vs $3! While MGC is a cute place to visit if you like gardening, I don't think I'll make any further big purchases here.

This review is only about their landscaping service. I've had a mixed experience.
I wanted a native garden created for the small backyard of my Vienna townhome, and was very happy to see they specialize in native plants. The landscape designer came out for the $75 initial look and then sent me a rough sketch with suggested plants. It took me a few months to pick up the project again for various reasons. When I looked through the plants, not all of them were actually native, he was responsive when I sent him new suggestions and we agreed on a planting plan.
So far so good. However, the irrigation plan he sent was really expensive, and after we said it seemed like overkill, he sent us a new plan with the cost reduced to half (2K instead of 4K). I sent in the deposit.
My real dissatisfaction began after that. There was no communication from that point on, until I got an email to tell me that the plants were in, but the occupants (the house is rented) would need to handwater for some days because the irrigation system wasn't in yet! I have had 5 gardens professionally installed, and have never heard of the irrigation system going in after the plants. I got no response from the designer when I emailed him expressing great concern about digging up the garden to install sprinkler pipes post-planting, and had to make expensive international calls (I was travelling at the time) to Merrifield and finally got the head landscaper, who said it was hard to schedule the crews exactly right (I found this disconcerting) but that they often did the irrigation after the planting with no ill effects. I was not happy with this, since no other installation company I have used ever does the work out of order, but he gave me his assurance that all would be well, so I let it go, but with a red flag in my mind. The irrigation system was, however, at my request, installed immediately, so the tenants would not need to handwater.
The last deliverable was supposed to be a final planting plan and a sketch of the irrigation system layout (which is needed when repairs are needed, which sprinkler systems routinely need). I did not receive either, in spite of an email reminder to my designer, until after I called Merrifield and said I could not pay my balance until after I received this final deliverable, both of which are standard deliverables when a garden is installed and had been promised to me as part of the work.
So net - a mixed review here.

This place is not for customers who want to enjoy themselves. The annuals department practices poor plant maintenance and unfortunately they spray their plants with chemicals before entering the garden center so they are artificially healthy. Their plants have negatively affected my garden. My mother was purchasing hanging plants for a family member's wedding and wanted to place a small order over 1 1/2 months in advance. My mom came in politely a few times and she was told "I don't really know" and "I'm pretty sure I can find them I just don't know yet" on separate occasions. The third visit she was trying again to get some form of information but Stephanie had no answers for her an couldn't have cared less about helping her. The annuals staff manager Stephanie Brock treated my mother so disrespectfully by staring at her phone when my mom was in the middle of trying to get information. My mom ended up receiving a partial order of hanging baskets and her aggravation was the result of Stephanie's obvious disorganization. If I really badly need gardening items I may go back, otherwise I'm gonna avoid going there because its just really not worth it.
