Thanksgiving 2019. Ready to have a beautiful, relaxing day at home, sheltered from the wind and rain. Get up in the morning, go down to turn on the heat--nothing. The unit tries to start but the gas flame won't light. This furnace has an electric igniter, so no pilot light to check. I'm stuck inside, freezing, on an unusually cold Thanksgiving Day for San Francisco. About an hour later, the power goes out. Luckily, I wasn't cooking dinner for anyone!

PG&E restored the power in about an hour, but I decided to tough it out with the lack of heat until the next day. Early Friday morning, I looked up furnace repair and called the first and highest rated number on the list. Got a voice recording: "We're closed for the holiday until Monday." Fair enough, but not good enough for me. I left an urgent message but didn't expect to hear back.

When I didn't hear back by the next morning, I was getting desperate, so I picked another highly rated name from the list. United Appliance picked up after a few rings and said they'd be at my house in about 45 minutes. They didn't keep me waiting. Derek appeared right on time, very focused and energetic, and within 20 minutes he'd correctly diagnosed and fixed the problem: a bad igniter. He had the part in his truck. I was incredibly happy and relieved. He even knew the age of my unit and advised me that it shouldn't need replacing for at least a few more years. If I'm still in this house when it does reach that point, guess who I'm gonna call? :-)

Working with Sergey was great! He was punctual, responsive with scheduling, skilled, and communicated clearly and without judgment about what needed fixing, how much it would cost. He quickly diagnosed the issue, fixed it on the spot, and advised me how to avoid it breaking again in the future.

When Sergey arrived, he got right to work: asked what broke, other background information; investigated the furnace with his tools, and after 10-15 minutes discovered what needed fixing. After explaining what was broken and why, he asked for authorization to fix it. Turns out he had spare components in the van, so he could immediately fix it.

The whole visit was probably less than an hour and completely resolved the problem: no furnace on a cold winter night.

United was responsive, courteous, communicative, and did a great job. This was true online, and true of the individual technician, who went above and beyond to get the job done fixing my hvac when he found out my in-laws were in town for the holidays.

The technician took several hours to diagnose a problem with our oven. I asked him to also pull out our dishwasher since there was a bad smell that I thought might have been a dead animal :( He has me pay him $100 cash on top of the fee for the oven. I agreed for some reason. Should have been a red flag.

He tested the dishwasher to ensure it was working, (it was) pulled the dishwasher out from under the counter and we removed the remains of a dead rat from the bottom (Ew.)

After he leaves, we try to run the dishwasher but it is broken and won't light up. We call him again and he says the rat must have chewed through the wires...even though it was working five minutes before he pulled it out. We called him to fix it and came back but did not fix it and the oven is still broken.

TLDR: Shady. Broke our dishwasher and now we have to pay to get it fixed or buy a new one. AVOID.
